The asymmetry is not as crucial as you may think: Ukraine's population (2020 figures) was 44 millon. Let's say 2% of these (1 million) had negative preconceptions about their fellow Russian speaking compatriots. Now, imagine that via a "popular uprising" the decision makers for the new state are recruited from the 2%. Voila, you have a fascist government. Something similar happened in 1939 where I had no choice but be born. Humanity is a farce.

I get tribal hatred. But every culture, tribe, nationality in the world has massacred, bullied etc other tribes somewhere in their history. The whole point of human progress is to evolve beyond “He hit me first” and Putin just screwed up the future for the whole world.
